Green alder is not endangered in Germany. 32 populations with over 110,000 green alders have been mapped. Its main distribution is in the Allgäu Alps. In addition, there are 22 post-glacial relict populations with a total of only 1,000 individuals in the Black Forest.
Conservation activities are needed for the very small relic populations in the Black Forest and the large populations in the Alps with their specific gene pool. The genetic variation within the populations is significantly higher in green alder than in grey alder.
