The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, through the BLE as project management organisation, supports various programmes that offer funding opportunities for biological diversity.
Model and demonstration projects close the gap between science and practice. They are not research, but develop model concepts for the conservation and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity. The concepts must be new, exemplary and transferable. BMEL has published a brochure in which selected MuD projects of recent years are presented.
The Biological Diversity Assessment Projects funding guideline promotes inventories, surveys and non-scientific studies in the field of biological diversity. The aim of the contracts is the recording, inventory and documentation of genetic resources, the monitoring of the stock development of genetic resources and the creation of other information bases in this area. Current projects include the recording and documentation of the genetic diversity of grayling, tench and lake trout, a molecular genetic determination of apple varieties of the fruit gene bank, and the inventory and verification of rhododendron and azalea varieties.
In addition to the funding opportunities just described, which are specifically geared to biological diversity, there are other funding programmes within the BLE which promote projects on biological diversity in the respective thematic context.
The Federal Programme for Organic Agriculture and Other Forms of Sustainable Agriculture (BÖLN), for example, supports projects on organic vegetable breeding/variety of varieties and the marketing of regionally typical varieties and breeds.
The innovation promotion programme focuses on application-oriented research and development projects that implement marketable products, processes or services in close cooperation between science and industry. The programme has a broad thematic focus and, depending on the focus of current calls for funding, is also interesting for projects on biological diversity.
The protein crop strategy promotes the cultivation and processing of domestic protein crops. Interesting for projects on biodiversity in this thematic context.
