Contributing to the future-proof and sustainable production of food and raw materials with a broad diversity of genetic resources. With the National Strategy on Genetic Resources, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture aims to strengthen this important part of biodiversity.

Genetic Resources Strategy

Strengthen biodiversity. Protecting genetic resources. This is an important task if we are to counter the major crises of our time.
To this end, the BMEL has published the National Strategy on Genetic Resources for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. It focuses on the importance of genetic resources in adapting to the climate crisis, food security, biodiversity and as cultural heritage.

Specifically, the aim is

  • to ensure the long-term conservation of genetic resources,
  • strengthening sustainable use,
  • expanding knowledge and knowledge transfer, and
  • strengthening cooperation at all levels and making sensible use of synergies.
