Call for the breeding of new legume varieties

For the promotion of legumes for food and agriculture, the Federal Ministry for Agriculture set up a Strategy on Legumes. The secretariat is hosted by the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE).

In the framework of the Legume Strategy, BLE has published a call for research and development (R&D) projects to breed high-performance legume varieties. Project outlines can be submitted until 1 December 2020.

The breeding projects aim to increase the crop productivity of legumes, for example by tapping genetic resources and improving quality and yield. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture supports the projects with the aim of optimising the potential of legumes as food and feed as well as their ecosystem services in conventional and organic farming.

Project outlines can be submitted to the BLE until 1 December 2020. Natural and legal persons with business operations in the Federal Republic of Germany as well as federal and state research institutes are eligible for funding. In the case of collaborative projects, supervision by scientific institutions is envisaged. The project duration is limited to a maximum of three years. The projects are scheduled to start in autumn 2021.
